Background[]
Sparks Nevada, the marshal on Mars, must find and retrieve robots who have broken out of prison. Croach the Tracker, a Martian, is under onus to Nevada for saving his tribe, so he is helping Nevada find the robot outlaws.
Plot[]
The episode begins with Sparks Nevada and Croach the Tracker riding across Mars following a prison break. They are hunting down the escaped robot outlaws when they come across a small flying saucer invading Mars airspace. Recognizing that it does not have proper permits, Nevada lassos the tiny spaceship. After some technical difficulties, tiny space aliens emerge. They are Professor Genius and Adjunct Professor Genius from the SK system. The aliens brandish an inversifier, a device that "reversifies the relationship of outsides to insides," i.e., turns things inside-out. They express their desire to write a paper about the effects of the inversifier to help Adjunct Professor Genius earn his doctorate, and threaten our heroes with being turned inside-out.
Insanity Jane, Jilm, Jindlefer, and Callusandra, hostile women of the Lynchtree family, enter with a noose and the intent to hang Croach on account of his being a Martian. They claim the law states that "ignorance of the law means it don't apply," therefore they have the legal right to hang Croach despite its violation of Mars Public Resource Code sections 15013-15018, of which they have never heard. The science aliens realize that Nevada is distracted by the angry posse of Lynchtree women, so they plot to inversify the Lynchtrees to both help Nevada out and help themselves write their paper. Croach selflessly leaps in front of the device's ray to protect the Lynchtrees from being inversified, and he is himself turned inside-out. Nevada lectures the Lynchtrees on taking the law into their own hands. Chastened, the Lynchtrees agree to be a helpful posse rather than an angry one, and depart to whitewash Widow Johnson's fence.
Waxing poetic about Croach's apparent demise, Nevada is suddenly interrupted by Croach's body self-healing via the great power of Nah Nohtek. Claiming that no harm was really done, the science aliens fly off, promising to obtain proper permits and planning to write a sociology paper on the events of the day so Adjunct Professor Genius can at least earn course credit. While flying away, the science aliens let slip that Mars is about to be destroyed, leaving Nevada and Croach with a sense of foreboding.
Notes[]
- Originally, Croach's onus was reduced only when he helped Sparks Nevada track "metal enemies" (robots) due to the robot John Steelhands originally nearly wiping out Croach's tribe with a flood from the polar ice caps of Mars. Nevada gives Croach permission at the beginning of the episode to chip away at the onus by being a "general help."
- Folksy Hal says the next adventure will be called "Feets of Strength," but the subsequent episode's title is "Agony of the Feet."

Changes[]
Although the overall plot was the same, there were many small changes in the TAH Live performance, with much of the dialogue being punched up. Some of the bigger changes were as follows:
- In his intro, Folksy Hal acknowledges that this is a re-do of a previous episode and that we know the outcome, but they're giving us the "gallant goods with a shiny new polish."
- The character Jilm does not appear in this version of the episode.
- The surname of the family was changed to Bristleschmidt, and they no longer specifically want to hang Croach. Instead, they list their grievances with people different from them and poked Croach with a pitchfork.
- Before inversification, Croach insists he is not friends with the science aliens, nor is he friends with Sparks Nevada, as they have little history, are only onus-bound and possess many dissimilarities. Nevada opines that in the long run, differences can make friendships too, and they'll find some kind of mutual respect and perhaps friendship. Croach is skeptical.
- Post-inversification, Nevada briefly calls Croach his friend.
Notes[]
- Marc Evan Jackson's cat makes an appearance on the staircase landing in the background, starting at 2:27 during the theme song and leaving at 16:58 during Nevada's eulogy.
- Mark Gagliardi's inversification transformation and Nah Nohtek rightside-in-ing are both spectacles that cannot be described in words. As pictured in the screenshot above, while Croach is inside-out, Mark Gagliardi hid under his jacket with his arms and hands at stark angles to physically portray inside-outing.
- After the episode ends, a rendition of Ride Along Sparks Nevada is performed by Janet Varney, Johnathan Coulton and Paul F. Tompkins accompanied by the song's composer, Eban Schletter, on guitar and theremin.
